WATER CONTAINER AND SUPPORT

his earthenware three-piece ensemble in the shape of a woman carrying a water pot is used to store and cool water. San Blas Atempa is located in the tropics, and water there is cooled through evaporation. The flared bowl between the pot and figure is filled with sand to absorb the moisture and promote further cooling. The imposing and dignified sculpture of the base bears an abstract resemblance to the Tehuanas the fabled women of Tehuantepec. The simple fluted band serves to suggest she is wearing a cloak. Vessels like this are often painted.
